An AMA District II Club
The Syracuse Thunderbirds Aero Radio Society, Inc. model airplane club, after incorporating in 1979 and obtaining a use permit from the Town of Schroeppel, purchased twenty-three acres of farmland four miles east of Phoenix, New York, for the specific purpose of promoting the design, construction and organized flying of radio control aircraft. Later, a neighboring parcel to the east was also purchased.
Today, situated on nearly 42 acres, the almost 100 members enjoy flying off well maintained grass and geotextile runways, a hovering test area, as well as a control line circle complete with rubberized takeoff runway and concrete pilot pad. Our club is also registered as a FRIA so members and guests flying at the club do not need to have Remote ID operating from their models. The facilities include an enclosed pavilion and electrical service for charging batteries, both indoors and outside along the fence at the pit stations. We also have internet and web cameras, for the convenience of the membership.
Our members vary in experience and skill level from those just starting out in the fun world of model aviation to those with many decades of building and flying experience, who are eager to share their knowledge. In the sky and along the flight line on any particular day, you may find any combination of "Sunday Sport" type R/C aircraft, 3D and aerobatic models, sailplanes, gliders, pattern birds, pylon racers, WWI or WWII scale aircraft, turbine jets, control line models, quadcopters and helicopters at the field. You may even see an occasional model rocket launch.
During the Spring and Summer we offer weekly special interest evenings, Monday through Thursday, with Thursdays being our Flight School evenings for those wanting to learn how to fly planes. Flight school is available to members and the public. You can see our full schedule of events and weekly special interest evenings on our website's cameras page.
